While we appreciate the joy and celebration that comes with enjoying our liqueurs and spirits, we also recognize the importance of responsible drinking. As Lucas Bols, we urge our customers to consume alcohol responsibly and in moderation.

Here are a few tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable drinking experience:

Know Your Limits: Understand your tolerance for alcohol and know when it’s time to stop. Regulate your intake by calculating the units* of alcohol in a beverage.

* A unit of alcohol is a useful measure to keep track of how much you drink and avoid harmful effects of alcohol. It helps you compare the strength of different drinks and follow the advice for low-risk drinking.

In short, a unit alcohol describes the amount of alcohol in your drink.

The higher the number of units alcohol, the more alcohol is in your drink.

At Lucas Bols, a unit of alcohol is defined as 10 grams (=12,5ML) of pure alcohol, following the guidelines from the World Health organization (WHO), the standard in Europe.

How to calculate the units in your drink: alcohol percentage x quantity in ml / 1250.

For example:

A 250ml glass of beer with an ABV (alcohol by volume) level of 5% contains 1 unit of alcohol.

A standard 175ml glass of wine with an ABV level of 12% contains about 1.7 units of alcohol.

A single 30 ml shot of spirits with an ABV level of 40% (like vodka, whiskey, or rum) contains about one unit of alcohol.

And some well known cocktail examples: an Espresso Martini or Pornstar Martini contains about 1.7 units alcohol, a Negroni or Margarita around 2.0 units alcohol.

A unit of alcohol is a handy tool to measure how much you drink and prevent alcohol-related harm. It lets you compare the alcohol content of different drinks and keep your drinking within safe limits.

Here are some other tips to drink responsibly:

Drink Water:

Drink water between alcoholic drinks to stay hydrated and slow down your drinking. But be aware, drinking water does not reduce the amount of alcohol in your body.

Don’t Drink and Drive:

Never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking. Choose a sober driver, take public transport, or use a ride-sharing service instead.

Be Careful of Mixing:

Mixing alcohol with other drugs, including prescription or over-the-counter medicines, can be risky. Always check with a doctor if you’re not sure.

Help Each Other:

If you’re drinking with friends or family (no one under 18 should drink), look after each other and step in if someone is drinking too much. Suggest a non-alcoholic drink instead.
